MANOS UNIDAS INCLUSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM – PROJECT UPDATE
April 3, 2014
After a very successful first year of including 16 special needs children with highly trained accompanying
teachers into the public school system in 2013, the Manos Unidas Inclusive Education Program
continues in 2014 with more children and more schools.
The 16 students and teachers from last year began classes on March 10th in the same schools and
classes where they were successfully included in 2013. For 2014, Manos Unidas has already identified 9
other students ready to included. In addition, 2 new schools will be added to the program to receive the
special needs students and workshops for teachers, students, and parents to better facilitate the
understanding of special needs children and the importance of the program. One of the new schools is a
public primary/secondary school and the other is a private nursery school.
We hoped to find a public nursery school to include in the program this year, but due to a lack of
understanding of special needs children it was unfortunately not possible to find a host school by the
beginning of classes. This is simply another example of why this program is so important!
